topping Rihanna this week when her brand new single ‘Diamonds’ outsold both One Direction’s ‘Live While We’re Young’ and previous number one spot holder PSY, who rode his invisible horse back to second place with dance sensation ‘Gangnam Style’.
It was a close call mid-week when One Direction were up 250 sales on Rihanna, but ‘Diamonds’ ended up selling 19,000 more copies than ‘Live While We’re Young’.
Simon Cowell showed his support for the boys by tweeting: “Looks like we’ve got a battle for number 1 in the UK this week with Rihanna & One Direction. Let’s get behind our boys”
But shortly after the results, Cowell went quiet while Rihanna celebrated her success tweeting: “#Diamonds debuts at NUMBER ONE on the UK charts!!!! #thatdamnRihannaReign !!!! UK is hard body”
When One Direction’s ‘Live While We’re Young’ was first unveiled and available to pre-order, it broke records and became the fastest-selling pre-order single ever! Unfortunately, this wasn’t enough to secure their place at number one this week!
However, they shrugged it off and didn’t seem too bothered about coming in third place as they were too busy celebrating their success at Radio 1′s Teen Awards where they scooped 3 awards!
Way to go, boys!
One Direction’s Irish fan-base showed themselves to be true supporters as they managed to top the charts with the number one spot in Ireland!
But what happened to all of you UK directioners out there??
Maybe the boys are in with a chance of stealing back their place next week if all of you Directioners get behind them??
