Taylor Swift totally has a knack for writing break-up songs. Plenty of her most popular hits are about how to deal with a broken heart. But what’s her secret? According to Tay, the recipe for a good break-up anthem requires being able to talk out your problems with your closest friends first.
“I start all of my co-writing sessions with girl talk,” Taylor spilled to Billboard. “I walk in and I go, “‘I have to tell you what I’m going
through right now’ and I spend 25 minutes talking about the guy that I met four months ago and how things were fine and then he lied about this and I freaked out. I haven’t been talking to him, but I really want to. I want to write a song about that feeling. And then I get out my guitar and say here’s my idea, but I wanted to give you the back story before I played you the idea.”
Taylor’s never been afraid of putting herself out there through her music. Even though she doesn’t consider herself an expert on the subject of love, she’s willing to share her own experience of it with others. So it’s no surprise that she recorded her new album Red with this theme in mind.
“It’s all the different ways that you have to say goodbye to someone,” Taylor said. “Every different kind of missing someone, every kind of loss. When you are missing someone, time seems to move slower and when I’m falling in love with someone, time seems to be moving faster.”
Tay admits these different losses do affect the types of songs she writes. “So I think, because time seems to move so slow when I’m sad, that’s why I spend so much time writing songs about it. It seems like I have more hours in the day.”
Luckily, Taylor always has her friends to help
her out when she’s feeling down (and her guitar!). What do you think about Taylor’s girl-talk-inspired songwriting? Do you plan on listening to her new album, Red? Tell us in the comments
